Small business owners and sales professionals do not regularly ask for referrals. I read recently that about 70% of sales people don’t ask for referrals. They don’t even approach the subject with their clients.

Why? Many are afraid of being rejected. Some falsely believe that they will make their clients feel uncomfortable. Others think asking makes them look like they’re begging for business. And far too many just plain forget to ask.

If you don’t ask for referrals regularly don’t be surprised if you are not getting enough to make a dramatic impact on your business. So how and when should you ask for referrals? Here are 5 tips that you can implement immediately.

Ten tips on How to get More Referrrals

Talk to any small business owner about how they find most of their new customers or clients and the word referral always comes up. However, in most cases their referrals are sporadic and unpredictable. In order to receive a steady flow of referrals in to your business, I recommend you develop a specific referral program. Here are 10 suggestions to help you develop a successful referral program.

1. Commitment: Make a strong commitment to developing a specific, proactive referral program.

2. Set Specific Goals: Decide on the number of referrals you want to get and how long it will take you to get them; for example, 30 referrals in 10 weeks.

3. Client/ Customer Profile: If you don’t know what kind of referral you want you will never find them. Profile your current client base to develop a profile of your ideal prospect.

4. Identify your Influencers: Develop a list of people who you have a close relationship with that are in a position to give you referrals. Let them know who your ideal prospect is. Discuss it with them over lunch; your treat. Invest in building a meaningful relationship with them.

A web server is software that continuously runs on a computer and allows other computers to download documents from it. This text that you're reading right travelled over a network connection from Lifehacker's hosting web server to your browser. Web servers are usually loud, scary, headless machines in cold windowless rooms, but you can run one under your desk at home.

Why would you want to run a home web server? Maybe you want to download files on your home computer from anywhere. Like, say, your digital music collection. In this how-to, we'll set up a home web server that lets anyone (with the right password!) connect to your computer and download your MP3's from it, for a nice way to share your music collection with friends, or play a song from your home machine at the office for co-workers.

In an earlier post we stated “Given that the majority of corporate web sites are not for famous brand-names, like Coca Cola, they start seriously challenged in that few prospects have heard of the product or the company before their first encounter“. When competing head to head with an established name it is a daunting task to be recognised as a serious competitor.

To discover who your competition is in a web business, be sure that you’re always actually using the right keywords you find and search for others businesses using them. By understanding your competition, you can begin to understand what separate your business from the pack. Then by tweaking your web site, its message and your on-line marketing campaign it is possible to avoid directly competing for rankings.

You may need to offer your customers free products or special prices for referring others to your website, but obviously you must provide to validate a limited-time offer. People are more likely to trust a business which their friends or co-workers recommend, and the increased sales will more than compensate for the cost of the free products. Even in the cyber-world word of mouth referrals are vitally important this is one of the reasons people are involved in building networks on Social media sites, like Facebook. Ultimately the information people obtain from their cyber-friends can be the deciding factor when choosing between two competing products.

Why Your Business Needs Quality Content

Business content today is a significant part of any effective marketing plan. In fact, the process of creating and distributing content is so important that it qualifies as a strategic business activity.

That's why your business needs a content plan.

The word "content" is confusing enough due to the way it gets bantered around these days. But it's also difficult for many small-business owners to come up with a big-picture view of the role content plays in helping them to acquire clients.

First things first: Content means more than cranking out the occasional blog post. You have to think of your content as a total body of work that you're building to serve a specific set of long-term business goals.

Among other things, that means you'll have to understand and create content for the most important keyword phrases in your industry; for the essential educational themes in your business; and for your company's core points of differentiation.

Above all, though, you must think of content as a tool that moves your prospects from awareness to conversion. And in order to succeed at this, your content needs to serve at least five key purposes. Each of these purposes represents an important part of your overall content strategy.

When working with or within a large organization, it's important to keep it simple and stay focused on the goal so you don't get consumed by bureaucracy.

Even though many of us work in small teams or small companies, we also work with large organizations all the time. They are our customers, our suppliers, and our partners. Some of you may even have been successful enough to build your start-up into a 100+ employee company that exhibits the organizational dynamics of a large corporation.
At Avondale, many of our clients, investors and partners are from large organizations. In one instance, we acquired a company that was owned by a large bank, which was especially challenging given the bank's group decision-making culture and aversion to risk.

Americans don't like to talk about credit card debt. Really, really don't. In a January 2009 survey by CreditCards.com, respondents said that credit card debt is their least favorite topic of conversation. Eighty-one percent said they'd be very or somewhat unlikely to discuss it with someone they've just met. This places the subject even with personal love life (also at 81 percent) and ahead of salary (77 percent), amount of mortgage or rent payment (72 percent), health problems (62 percent), and weight (50 percent).

And with good reason. After pausing for a deep breath during the recession, U.S. consumers are charging forward once again, waving around the plastic like it's 2006. Research firm Card Hub reports that Americans piled up $18.4 billion in credit card debt in the second quarter of 2011. That's 66 percent more than in the same quarter of 2010, and it's a whopping 368 percent more than in the second quarter of 2009. Card Hub CEO Odysseas Papadimitriou called the numbers “mind boggling.”
Here are 20 more -- if not mind boggling at least interesting -- facts about Americans and their love-hate (and love again) relationship with credit:

In Afghanistan, John Childs learned firsthand the importance of protective eyewear.

The Army captain had seen soldiers hit with shrapnel, their whole faces scarred and torn, except for two clean patches around the eyes where the military-grade glasses had been.

The sight gave Childs, an avid rock climber, an idea: start a business making stylish glasses with military-grade protection -- something that could be worn climbing a cliff, skiing down a mountainside, or just walking down the street. He knew the idea had potential. But getting the business off the ground wouldn't be easy.

Yet within a year, after working part time on the business as a soldier in Afghanistan and then back in the U.S., Childs had a finished product and a business. He also had a manufacturer in Taiwan, an e-commerce website, and access to a warehouse that could ship his orders anywhere in the world. Total cost? $3,500.

Across the country, thousands of small businesses are getting off the ground with minimal investment. Many use traditional cost-cutting measures -- sharing office space, buying furniture and computer equipment wholesale, hiring temp workers -- but many others turn to the Internet. Using a suite of cheap online services, these companies can now essentially outsource their entire staff.

As Childs says, for smart companies the financial risk is "almost nonexistent."

According to the Small Business Administration, more than 50 percent of small businesses are home-based. In 1999, only a few hundred thousand households in the United States possessed a home network, although many more "expressed interest" in having one.

Today, many millions of households in the U.S. and worldwide have adopted home computer networking. Millions more have yet to build their first home network. Even those who've previously taken the plunge are now beginning to revamp their networks for wireless - the current wave of useful technology for home networking.

My organization has been using VMware and Xen virtualization products for a few years for several purposes, including testing of new software configurations, development, and consolidation of production servers. We use VMware Workstation to test software, and we use VMware GSX Server to consolidate server software onto fewer physical machines. We also use Xen for some of our hosted services that run on Linux servers.

Based on that experience,I have seen the advantages that virtual machines can provide. Although quite a few virtual machine benefits explain why interest and usage have seen a strong uptick of late, virtual machine technology is not without its flaws.

This article discusses the pros and cons of today's virtual machine technology to help you determine whether the cost of implementing virtual machine technology is worthwhile. Should the VM benefits outweigh the drawbacks in your multi-server datacenter, virtual machine technology can provide more reliability, easier manageability, and lower overall cost for your organization. Features and Benefits The following sections explain the key benefits of virtual machine technology: isolation, standardization, consolidation, ease of testing, and mobility. Isolation

Nobody likes to back up their business data and applications. Even at its best, the process is slow, often balky, and generally annoying. Sort of like flossing your teeth.

But just like flossing, we do it because the alternative is much, much worse: Your teeth could fall out. Or you could lose irreplaceable business information, valuable applications, and -- worst case scenario -- even your entire business.

Ouch.

But while technology improvements haven’t really changed dental floss all that much (apart from using Teflon), the world of backups is undergoing a fundamental transformation from making copies of your company data and applications on local hard drives or tapes to storing it all online, often usingcloud computing services to make the process faster, more convenient, more secure, and more affordable.

Basically, cloud backup is a form of online backup where your data is stored on one or more remote computers. There are many advantages of putting your data in the cloud, but which ones matter most to your company can vary according to what data you’re backing up and how you’re doing it.

The biggest advantage to backing up your data far away from your own computers (and servers) is that your data is protected even if a disaster (whether a tornado or a terrorist attack) affects your business.

Second, backups in the cloud are accessible from anywhere

Since its creation in 1988 as a short-term solution to manage elements in the growing Internet and other attached networks, SNMP has achieved widespread acceptance. SNMP was derived from its predecessor SGMP (Simple Gateway Management Protocol) and was intended to be replaced by a solution based on the CMIS/CMIP (Common Management Information Service/Protocol) architecture. This long-term solution, however, never received the widespread acceptance of SNMP.

SNMP is based on the manager/agent model consisting of an SNMP manager, an SNMP agent, a database of management information, managed SNMP devices and the network protocol. The SNMP manager provides the interface between the human network manager and the management system. The SNMP agent provides the interface between the manager and the physical device(s) being managed (see the illustration above).

No matter which operating system you want to have installed on your machine, there's one thing they all have in common: partitions. These are logical pieces of your actual hard disk space, defining the size and the file system format for the operating systems and data that are going to be placed on them.

Being able to control the partitions is one of the most basic, most important aspects of mastering your operating system. This is true especially in data centers where access latencies, reliability and power consumption easily offset the initial cost overhead.

The predominant SSD storage medium at this moment is NAND flash memory and this is not likely to change in the near future even though new technologies such as phase change memory, magnetoresistive memory, resistive memory, organic memory, nanotube-based memory and finally NOR flash are on the horizon. NAND flash memory has some peculiarities; some of them are making it the media of choice in the current technology landscape, others, though, are posing some severe limitations with respect to the applicability of NAND flash as a drop-in replacement for rotatable media, at least for those unaware of the possible pitfalls.

In the first installment of this series, we'll take another technology deep dive into NAND technology and in the following articles apply the insights into the NAND idiosyncrasies to Solid State Drive management in order to optimize performance, minimize wear, and most importantly, maintain performance over the live of an ageing drive.

by Johan De Gelas on 2/15/2012 9:24:00 AM
Posted in IT Computing , Virtualization

We have had epic discussions with quite a few readers about the importance of virtualization in our reviews. In our six-core Opteron review we wrote:

"Let there be no misunderstanding: how well a new Server CPU handles virtualization determines whether it is a wallflower or a blockbuster."

Even back in 2008, IDC expected that 52% of the servers would be used for virtualization, but in other reports the numbers were significantly lower. For example, more recently (April 2011) IDC reported that about 20% of all newly purchased servers are used in virtualized environments. No doubt there is some confusion between buying a server for virtualization and the numbers of workloads that find a home in a VM.IDC reports (Dec 2010) that more than 70% of applications are running inside a VM, but there is more.

The 20% virtualized servers number seems low, but you have to drill down a bit in the data. First of all, when we focus on the "mature" markets (US, Europe, Japan, Parts of Asia) the percentage of virtualized servers rises to 30%. And if you then take into account that a few players, such as Google (installed base of 1 million servers), facebook (100k+ servers) and Intel (100k+ servers) are buying massive amounts of non-virtualized servers, you can understand the percentage of virtualized servers is a lot higher among the rest of the server market. In other words, if you do a survey among the server buyers (instead of looking at the server volumes), the percentage of people buying a server for virtualization is much higher. In fact, when we talked to several analysts they indicated that if you ignore the Googles and Facebooks of the earth, the virtualization rate of servers might be as high as 70%.

One of the biggest problems with Microsoft Word is the ridiculous amount of toolbars, ribbons, and options that take up screen real estate when you're trying to work. It's enough to drive most people away from Word, but if you're stuck with it and want a simplified experience, Apple blog TUAW has a guide to creating a minimal workspace in Word.

Along with a few handy tips for getting rid of the obnoxious toolbars, ribbons, and status bar, TUAW highlights a simple trick to speeding up the launch by ditching the Document Gallery. When you start up Word and get the Document Gallery window, click the "Don't show this when opening word" checkbox and you'll increase your startup time significantly. The directions might seem a little Apple-centric, but can be applied for Windows users as well. Hit up the full post on TUAW for the full collection of tips.

You don't need a hammer, a saw, and a shelf full of This Old House tapes to qualify as a bona fide do-it-yourselfer. For computer aficionados, building your own PC is the ultimate do-it-yourself project--and you don't even need to be a pocket-protector type to get the job done.

Why build your own PC? The best reason is to craft a system that exactly matches your needs. The next best reason is to save money: With careful shopping, you can build a custom PC for $100 to $200 less than an off-the-shelf system costs. As a bonus, you'll learn a lot about how PCs work by building your own.

But building a complete PC isn't everyone's cup of tea. One of the biggest advantages of buying an off-the-shelf, name-brand system is having access to one-stop technical support. If you run into trouble with your home-built system, you'll have to figure out how to isolate the problem yourself. You'll also need to spend time researching and buying the components for your system. PCWorld.com's Product Finder is a good place to start looking.

Everyone needs a good monitor to get the most out of a PC. From standard-issue 19-inchers to 30-inch monsters, here's how to sort out what you need.

From Our Research Lab

You're planning on upgrading your hard drive, but there's one small problem: How do you get your data from the old hard drive to the new one, without reinstalling everything? Here's a step-by-step guide to seamlessly transition to a new drive.

If you've bumped up against the limits of your small, old hard drive over and over, it may be time to upgrade. In some instances, all the desktop user may need to do is install a second (or third) hard drive for a little more space. But that's not always an option, especially for laptop users. The solution: Clone your old drive—complete with your operating system and all your data—to a new, bigger drive. Read the details below.
